Richmond Not-for-Profit Organizations Targeted by Email Scam Artist
Posted on 02.08.16
The Better Business Bureau (BBB) has issued a scam alert for Richmond area not-for-profit organizations. Several local not-for-profits have been targeted via email by ‘Ken McFarlane’ or ‘Kenneth McFarlane’ with phony check donations. The contact information listed on the email is copied from a UK architectural firm website and is not legitimate. The BBB urges charities that receive this email to not engage with the sender or accept donations from ‘Ken McFarlane’.
Fortunately, none of the organizations that were targeted suffered financial losses from this particular scam artist. As a reminder, an organization's risk of being victimized by email scams can be minimized by filtering spam, ensuring antivirus software and firewalls are installed and up-to-date, treating email attachments with caution, distrust unsolicited emails and links within email messages.
