New sales tax form in Virginia
Beginning with the April 2025 filing period, Virginia is rolling out a redesigned Sales and Use Tax return (Form ST-1).
This revised form will merge and replace several existing forms and schedules, including ST-9, ST-8, ST-7, and ST-6.
While the overall method for filing sales tax in Virginia is not changing, users will notice updates to the layout, structure, and field order on the new form. These updates are designed to enhance the user experience and help the state process returns more efficiently.
Changes to Virginia sales tax form
- Monthly filers will first see the changes when they file their sales tax returns in May.
- Quarterly filers will see the changes when they file their sales tax returns in July.
- Regardless of the number of sales tax accounts, all returns will now use the new ST-1 form.
- If you need to file an amended return for a tax period before April 2025, you still need to use the old sales tax form
Taxpayers are encouraged to review the new format themselves and familiarize themselves with the changes ahead of filing deadlines to ensure a smooth transition.
