Keiter Wins Commonwealth Award of Excellence at the 72nd Virginia Public Relations Awards

Keiter Wins the Virginia PRSA’s Commonwealth Award of Excellence in the Marketing Business to Business Category.

The 72nd Virginia Public Relations Awards were held May 23, 2019, at the John Marshall Hotel with over 250 Virginia professionals in attendance. The Virginia PR Awards is a statewide competition for communications professionals which presents awards in more than 30 specialty categories in Public Relations.

We are proud to announce that Keiter was presented with the Commonwealth Award of Excellence in the Marketing Business to Business category for the Wayfair Marketing & PR Campaign led by former State and Local Tax Team Leader, Terry Barrett. This included an integrated campaign which involved the promotion of content created by Terry and her team across Keiter’s social media accounts and local media, which assisted in search engine optimization and lead generation. In addition, Terry was featured in Inc. Magazine’s most engaged article of 2018 discussing the impact of the Wayfair decision on businesses around the nation.

Wayfair Business Impact - Virginia State Local Tax CPATerry followed the appeals court decision concerning the impact of the South Dakota vs. Wayfair decision over the last year. The final Supreme Court ruling was issued this past summer and this monumental ruling changed online sales in America.

While this seemed to only impact large retailers for sales tax collections, it reached many more businesses than most realized. The new sales tax collection ruling put brick and mortar stores on a level playing field with online retailers and any sales that occurred across state borders. This ruling also allowed states to collect taxes on sales to their residents by defining their own thresholds of tax minimums.

This led to the complexities of understanding the different parameters of each of the 50 states that a business may sell into and need to collect and remit sales tax for their sales. The tax team at Keiter created several guides and maps updating business owners on the different state rulings that they need to be aware of and shared this valuable information through newsletter articles, external publications, speaking engagements, and social media to help businesses through the new tax changes.
