Trump Accounts Expand With Automatic Enrollment and Contribution Pledges

Recent developments bring new funding opportunities and account access for millions of American children

Trump Accounts continue to evolve as the U.S. Treasury Department expands access to the program and major private donors announce new contributions. Recent developments include the automatic establishment of millions of accounts and a pledge from Elon Musk to distribute SpaceX shares to American children.

These announcements introduce new considerations for families looking to take advantage of the tax-advantaged investment accounts.

Treasury automatically establishes millions of Trump Accounts

On October 1, 2026, the U.S. Treasury Department announced the completion of automatic enrollment for Trump Accounts, establishing more than 60 million additional accounts for eligible children. In total, nearly 70 million accounts have been created.

While the accounts have been automatically established, parents and guardians must still claim their child’s account to access and manage it. Automatic enrollment also does not guarantee eligibility for the one-time $1,000 federal contribution, which requires a separate election.

SpaceX and other donors pledge contributions

On October 19, 2026, Elon Musk announced plans to give one share of SpaceX stock to every child in America in 2027. The pledge could represent approximately $11 billion in stock, although details of the proposed distribution have not yet been finalized.

The announcement follows other major commitments, including a $6.25 billion pledge from Michael and Susan Dell to provide $250 contributions to approximately 25 million eligible children in qualifying ZIP codes.

New Treasury and IRS regulations, effective September 30, 2026, establish a framework for certain qualified contributions of publicly traded stock to Trump Accounts. Unlike traditional cash contributions invested in diversified funds, donated individual stocks may introduce additional investment risks and holding restrictions.

How the Trump Accounts app works

With millions of Trump Accounts automatically established, parents and guardians can now use the official Trump Accounts app or the online portal to claim and manage their children’s accounts.

The app is available for iOS and Android devices and provides several features to help families manage their accounts.

  • Claiming an account: Parents can begin by downloading the app or visiting the online portal to determine whether an account has already been established for their child. The claiming process requires identity verification and confirmation of the individual’s relationship to the child. If an account has not been established, parents can submit the required election form through the app, online portal, or IRS.
  • Making contributions: Once an account has been claimed and activated, parents can link a bank account or debit card to make contributions. Family members and other eligible contributors can also contribute, subject to applicable annual limits. Contributions are automatically invested in an eligible index fund.
  • Tracking investments: The app allows parents to view account balances, track contributions, review transaction history, and monitor investment performance. Families can also view account statements and tax documents.
  • Managing multiple accounts: Parents with more than one eligible child can access and manage multiple Trump Accounts through a single login.

Families should also understand that claiming an account and electing the one-time $1,000 federal contribution are separate steps. Parents can review eligibility requirements and submit Form 4547 through the IRS.
