VFS Team Member’s Experience at ACG® DealSchool

What is DealSchool?

The Association of Corporate Growth (ACG®) of Atlanta recently hosted the annual Southeast Region DealSchool on June 12 and 13, 2024. The conference is tailored towards emerging professionals and offered a comprehensive exploration into the intricacies of M&A transactions, including the lifecycle of a deal, market trends, and best practices. The event was a valuable opportunity for learning and networking, attended by a diverse audience of investment bankers, valuation consultants, transaction advisors, and lawyers.

Throughout the two-day conference, attendees benefited from the expertise of panelists encompassing lawyers, accountants, and other seasoned advisors. These panels were curated to impart crucial insights into various facets of M&A transactions, ensuring that early-career professionals remain well-informed from sourcing to integration. Ghazi Alawy, a VFS Associate at Keiter, who attended this conference, shares his experience going through the event.

Ghazi’s experience and takeaways

After a year and a half as a BAAS associate at Keiter, I recently transitioned to the Firm’s VFS Practice, along with supporting the efforts of Keiter Advisors. While my main focus is with the VFS Practice, associates in my position have the opportunity to attend DealSchool, where they gain a better understanding of the intricacies involved in the art of a Deal.

Reflecting on my experience as an attendee, I discovered several key takeaways essential for newcomers to the transaction advisory and consulting realm. Most notably, the significance of integration in transactions. Often overshadowed, this aspect plays a large role in the success of transaction deals as many acquisitions fail to create value due to poor integration. Questions surrounding post-signing operations, employee welfare, and benefit plans underscored the complexity of integration, highlighting the need for early consideration to facilitate a seamless transition. This realization underscores the importance of bridging the gap between transactional concerns and the real-world impacts on employees. Moreover, the conference facilitated invaluable networking opportunities, allowing participants to forge connections with peers and industry veterans alike. This networking aspect proved instrumental in broadening perspectives and fostering collaborative relationships within the transaction advisory community.

Why should someone go to ACG® DealSchool?

The 2024 Southeast Region ACG® DealSchool Conference offered a holistic understanding of deal dynamics and an extensive network towards future collaborations for emerging professionals in transaction advisory. For those embarking on careers in transaction advisory, business valuation, financial consulting, or law, attending such conferences is highly recommended, as it provides a solid foundation of knowledge and networking opportunities essential for professional growth.
