Keiter launches its 10th Externship season with a diverse and talented group
Keiter has a history of reaching out to the next generation of accounting professionals through learning opportunities. During the year, Keiter will host both internships, which are longer form work experiences that last a few months, and externships, which are one day sessions packed full of information.
Keiter’s extern sessions happen twice a year, once in the winter, which just took place last week, and once in the summer. Allowing college students who have a curiosity towards accounting to learn about the industry in a more “bite-size” form, compared to a full internship.
Last week’s externship kicked off our 10th year of hosting these sessions. The college students that participated were the largest group of students to attend since the program started. The students represented six different Virginia colleges and are seeking degrees in a wide range of majors, including Accounting, Business Administration, Economics, and Finance.
Highlights from 2024 Winter Externship
When in the participants arrived, they received a full day of experiences, both inside and outside of Keiter. Shortly after getting settled the students began their externship with a session by Gary Wallace, Managing Partner, and Julie Gustavsson, Partner and COO, welcoming and introducing them to Keiter.
Throughout the day, the externs were fully immersed in sessions that focused on different areas of accounting and professional development. Some of these sessions included building their brand on LinkedIn with the marketing team, going through an interactive case study with the tax department, and engaging with a partner panel where their questions could be asked and answered by members of the Keiter team.
As the day was coming to an end, the externs were introduced to a uniquely Richmond experience by going to the Bryd Theatre. The participants enjoyed a private viewing of the movie Secretariat in the historic theater.
The externship provided participants with a broad overview of a career at a public accounting firm, an introduction to our fun Firm culture and team, as well as an experience in the city of Richmond that Keiter calls home.
Over the years, many externs have become Keiter interns, and then continued their professional journey from there.
If you are interested in accounting or want to learn more about a career at Keiter, this is a great opportunity for you. Our next externship session will take place in the summer. Learn more about this amazing opportunity here.
